valentine prep

A friend of mine emailed me today for some ideas for her kid's class projects on Valentines Day.  What? Valentine's Day?  Today is only 1.11.11.  Yup. All ones.  

But then I quickly remembered how much fun homemade valentines are so I started scouring my bloggy archives for some ideas.  I found a few which I quickly posted on my Facebook page. Like this yummy cookie decorating project. Or these upcycled heart shaped crayons. And then there were these fun friendship bracelets and mad lib valentines.

But since we've already made most of these in our home, I needed something new.  So I kept looking. Then I found these paper flowers that you can inscribe with messages on Martha's website.

I think this could be a great Valentine for the kids to give their friends.  We could use all different color paper (my seven year old son would not go for the standard pink & red) and use pipe cleaners for the stems.  They could write sentimental messages... or silly ones.  Or both.

Or the kids could make these at school to bring home to their parents.  That would do a little heart string tugging now wouldn't it?  Well, assuming the sentiments were sweet.

I'll try some kiddie style flowers out and photograph them for you in a few days.  And we'll have more homemade valentine ideas come your way soon.

friday favorites

I'm not quite sure when the moustache took over retail but it certainly hasn't seemed to let up. Not even a hair. These moustache straws are a DIY version. How much fun would my kids and their friends have with them? So. Much. Fun.

I actually have a love/hate relationship with this poster.  Part of me finds it completely and utterly offensive to overweight children.  The other part of me can't stop laughing my jiggly ass off.

I'm still not sure what I enjoyed more about this movie.  The acting or the cinematography. It is brilliant and beautiful.  There were so many moments that I just wanted to stop the frame and stare at the screen.  Especially the scenes in Lionel's office.  The wall behind Bertie's chair, designed to exemplify it's seemingly peculiar resident, is undeniably exquisite. Oh, and then there were the clothes...

I'm not playing favorites here by only showing one of my beautiful children, but my little girl's first words this morning (after waking up next to me... which is NOT good) just melted my heart.

"I love my life right now," she said. Breathless I tell you. I asked my wise beyond her years four year old to embellish and she sat for a good three minutes rattling off all the parts of her little life that she adores.  Including taking the dog to the vet.  I am truly blessed.

And it's brilliant.  These are just a few of today's favs.  I absolutely love looking into other people's homes. Especially creative, artistic ones. (So much so I often think I should have become a real estate agent. But then you have all the other b.s. to deal with. Like actually selling the house.)

Beware. When I said time suck, I meant it. 

But in the very best kind of way.

time capsule

 Loving this idea from Kelli Crowe which I originally found here.

I am totally starting a 2011 jar this week and thinking maybe we should double back and create one for 2010 as well.  Lord knows we have enough stuff laying around this house to fill it.  My only concern is that the kids won't be able to actually edit what goes in it. They are so fond of "treasures" that our jar might be filled by Valentine's Day!

nine of '10

As we say goodbye to 2010, and I get ready to write my first blog post of 2011, I look back to some of our favorite discoveries of last year. Random. But all cool. Enjoy!...

1. hanky pankys ~ one size fits all. one size fits great. expensive. but worth it. thongs, boy shorts, camis. you name it. I wear it.

2. stand up paddle boarding ~ best full body workout I've ever experienced in my life. although I may need to move to a tropical island because in northern california it's not necessarily a year round sport.

3. dottie angel ~ talented artist, blogger & business woman. serious girl crush going on here.

4. blokus ~ 2-4 players. any age. this game rocks.

5. gelish ~ thirty minutes in the chair and you can reach into your wallet to pay as soon as you're done? and THEN you can wear a manicure that looks brand spanking for at least two weeks? um, hell yeah!

6. perler fuse beads ~ cheapest babysitter ever. easier for little hands than grown up ones but fun for parents too.

7. bob schneider ~ might have to move to austin for this guy. can I paddle board there?

8. yuba mundo ~ my 40th birthday present. to myself. ride alone, with one kid. or two. pack up the gear and go. this bike rocks.

9. kindle - we were a little late to the game here but you know what they say. one kindle for the family. free kindle downloads to the laptop and the iphone. we're reading machines.
